Standards and guidelines for making accessible software: an overview

Computers are a universal tool for communication, and increasingly a tool for learning. All learners should be able to access these tools, but for them to be able to do so, issues of accessibility must be addressed.

Schools are legally required to make 'reasonable adjustments' to ensure that learners with special educational needs and/or disabilities are able to use the resources provided, including ICT - and will look to the software industry to supply learning resources that meet their needs.

This document outlines the standards, guidelines and best practice in making ICT accessible. Adopting these principles will assist the software industry and schools to widen the resources available to support learning.

Cross-referencing of these guidelines to international standards and guidelines is available in the detailed information.
