Vocabulary management services

Vocabulary management services aim to improve the management and application of controlled vocabularies.

A Vocabulary Studio and Vocabulary Bank were designed to help educators in the UK education sector to find appropriate curriculum materials by introducing a common language and framework for tagging educational content. This service is now managed by the Information Standards Board (ISB) for education, skills and children's services (escs) on behalf of the Department for Children, Schools and Families.

Managing vocabularies

The Vocabulary Studio was an online application allowing vocabulary authorities to create, edit, manage and assure the quality of controlled vocabularies. Vocabularies are then published to a Vocabulary Bank, making them available for tagging digital content for the UK education sector.

Using vocabularies

The Vocabulary Bank was originally created to host the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) National Curriculum schemes of work and programmes of study (vocabularies for Curriculum Online, now closed). Its remit was widened to cover the whole education sector and now it includes National Strategies and subject specifiers vocabularies. The current service can be accessed from the Information Standards Board website.

Benefits

The Bank is designed to represent a single port of call through which to access all current vocabularies used in education.
