Functional specification: connectivity

This specification sets out the range of functionality that educational institutions should expect from their broadband connections and services.

Learners, educators and institutions should be able to communicate and collaborate at local, regional, national and international level. The connectivity that supports this communication should also lead to new forms of teaching and learning across the National Education Network.

Educational institutions are increasingly dependent on reliable, high performance broadband connections. Such connections must be provided in as sustainable, consistent and cost-effective a way as possible.

It is possible to use this document in several distinct ways:

  • Institutions can use the requirements set out here to review their existing connectivity arrangements and plan for the future.

  • For an institution that is being newly built or completely refurbished, the vision described here should provide a comprehensive framework for the institution's internet and wide area networking requirements.

  • For a local authority or RBC, this vision will help to inform the development or re-procurement of educational network services, by defining what should be available to institutions.
